Are landscape timbers safe to use for building a raised bed for vegetable gardening?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The tag says they are "treated to rejection" Does this type of pressure treated landscape timbers have toxins that will leach into our soil and will the vegetables grown in that area be unsafe to eat?

The timbers are Micropro AC2 if that means anything to anyone

Vegetable Gardening ?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

this is my firs time with a garden and I am a complete novice.

I started to notice I am getting discoloration and some yellow spotting on some of my plants. What does this mean? How can I stop it if it’s something bad?

Also my tomato plants don’t seem to be ripening, why is this? What can I do to help? Some of them have had tomatoes on them for like a month but are just firm and green.

Do you have some pointers on how to easily start an indoor "garden" for someone in a nursing home?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

My neighbor, who always worked outside in his yard, is now confined to a dementia ward in the local nursing home. He still responds to plants, trees, leaves etc. I did take him some bare branches in water off my corkscrew willow tree which have now leafed out and he likes that. What else can I do? I’m thinking of taking small pots full of potting soil and helping him start seeds, (coleus comes to mind as they could be transplanted and used as houseplants.) Do you have any other ideas? Obviously we are limited on space (there is a large windowsill in his room). Could we grow any vegetables? Thank you for any suggestions.

Vegetable Gardening!!?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Hey! Well, i have a question about vegetable gardening, but first I’m going to tell you all the things I’m growing just in case it affects your answer in some way. I’m growing: Zucchini, Cucumbers, Jalepenos, herbs (varied), Tomatoes, and Bush Pole Beans. My question is about my cucumbers and Zucchini. I have realized that they both become huge and it kind of takes over. Can you thin them and cut some stems off of them to make more room for other veggies? Thanks for your help!

Vegetable Gardening?

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Hi,
Im starting a new vegie garden from scratch and wondered if anyone could give me any tips on improving the soil, which vegies should go where and ways to get the best possible results.

The patch consists of 3 long rectangular beds. The soil is very sandy, virtually no rocks at all, the soil is a dark grey/blackish colour in some parts and then a redish brown in other parts. At the momment all ive done is dug the soil through and put in some sheep and cow manure.

The vegies im going to grow are pretty much all the basics; lettuce, carrots, corn, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, peas, pumpkin, watermelon, cucumber etc.
thanks
Forgot to mention that the top bed has shade from about midday on and the 2nd one from has some around 2-3pm-> the 3rd one is full sun.
