Building a bottle tower for container gardening

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Plastic bottles stacked into a bottle tower can be recycled to set up a vertical kitchen garden at home. The bottle towers are used for container gardening of vegetables and herbs. How to build such a tower is shown in different steps.

F27 Seed Exchange and Guerrilla Gardening

      Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

February 27, 2012: As part of the National Day of Action to Occupy Our Food Supply, Occupy Wall Street organized several actions including a Seed Exchange and a Seed Bombing of vacant lots, drawing attention to the threats posed by big agribusiness and celebrating the free exchange and planting of natural, unmodified crop seeds. Three days earlier, organic farmers seeking protection from GMO contamination of their crops lost a battle when Judge Naomi Buchwald of the Federal District Court in Manhattan dismissed the class-action suit Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) et al v. Monsanto. Representatives of Food Democracy Now came to the Seed Exchange and gave an emotionally charged account of the case, and their ongoing fight to safeguard the genetic purity of crops. In the afternoon, members of Time’s Up! and the New York Bicycling Coalition led a bike ride that toured community gardens of the Lower East Side and made a stab at beginning new ones by seed-bombing vacant lots. How are you turning your spring garden?

        Sunday, March 4th, 2012

Are you still using a pitch fork or is it all automated for you now.
Ours is so small we just began turning it over by using hand tools.
Probably be less time to use a tiller but it is a reason for everyone to get together.
Still to cold to plant but we are at least getting a start.
How does your garden do this time of year?

              Indoor Container Garden 4

              Thursday, March 1st, 2012

This is video 4 of my experiment growing vegetables indoors. This is after 3 full weeks of growth. The green beans and white onions seem to be doing well. The lettuce and green onions are alive, but maybe not so good. I started a new white onion bulb, 2 green onions, a Rooster Spur pepper plant, and a Cherokee Purple tomato plant. To help save money, I have resorted to using 2 liter soda bottles and milk jugs when the plants can use that size pot. I also got a smaller full spectrum light bulb (27 watt cfl, 100 watt incandescent equivalent) and a hangable lamp. It is not the final solution, but an interim step until I can order a 105 watt, 6500k bulb. See more at www.weirddivide.com
