I have seen both the documentary and HBO version of Grey Gardens. I loved them both! However, this is more of a psychological question. What causes people to go from living in elegance, to living in squalor?
Awful as it is, I can understand if you were born and raised in that kind of environment you wouldn’t know any better and just accept things as they are, filthy or not.
I would like to know how it happened to the Beales. These were 2 educated, intelligent, wealthy people who had class. They were meticulous in their makeup and appearance. They went from that life to squalor and I can’t understand. Even if they went broke, how could that factor in them living in filth? Why would both of them find this acceptable? I am trying to figure out how this starts. How 2 clean people can just start throwing trash on the floor, let it build up, and think nothing of it. It has to be more than laziness, because they aren’t ashamed of the situation. When they had visitors, and even the documentary crew in there, they welcomed them in like there was nothing wrong. When the health department came they couldn’t understand why.
How does this happen/start? They were not raised in filth. Does it start with laziness-you spill something on the floor for example, and say you’ll clean it later and never do? I am trying to understand how the 2 Edies could look at feces and a five foot pile of cans and think it was a nice addition to the decor! Did they both get mentally ill? At the same time? It would be easier to understand if Big Edie was living this way, and when Little Edie came home, saw conditions, was appalled, did something about it. What I don’t get is how both people see nothing wrong. I’d like to know what went through their minds the first time they decided to throw garbage on the floor instead of a trash can. Liberating? Defiance? Any answers?

My wedding colors are ivory and navy blue.
My fiance and I are going (May 1st 2011) to Las Vegas to get married at the Lakeside Garden. We’re having our ceremony there and going to dinner at Harrah’s afterwards with family.
We’re going to come back home and have a filipino (I am filipino) lunch reception at my parents house, their backyard (they have a pool, nice tiki decorated deck and it’s fenced) with a SuperMario wedding cake.
I was thinking of giving magnets as our favors, maybe scratch off lottery tickets and Vegas lollipops as our favors. I want to make my own menu but I’m not making a seating chart. I am going to have blue heart shaped balloons as decor and bubbles for the guest… is there anything else I can do to make it more of a themed kind of wedding? Just any advice to help me with ideas is appreciated!
Thank you

We have an in ground pool a the top of a small rise. It is in a flat area, with a crappy wire and post fence around it. Very shabby (not chic) looking. The surrounding area inside the fence, outside the pool is currently dug up of all it’s grass. Just made a mess when mowed. We have one small area/corner which we added some decking where we place our bistro table and chairs. The rest of the area which on two sides is about 2′ wide, and the third side which is 3′ wide is blah. We have a shabby chic/recycle type decor around the yard, pool house and house. We are on a very tight budget so recycling and re-purposing works best for us. I need help with ideas to make this area look interesting. I had an idea of perhaps small squares edged with some sort of timbers and then with plants in them spaced around the area here and there (I can transplant some plants from my garden to fill these). I don’t know what we could do with the in between areas though. We don’t want to use mulch, or too much rock due to trying to keep the cost down. I thought maybe something with old pallets? This is not an area we walk in either, it is purely for show. I can’t find any pics for ideas on line. I am open to all suggestions and nothing will sound too outlandish for me. We live in the northeast so this area is greatly used during the months of May-September. Then the brutal weather sets in.

We have 10 guests for our wedding and reception. Our budget is about ,000. Which place is best? The wedding is in January (not this year) in Anchorage Alaska. Our colors are different shades of blue, but those colors don’t need to carry over into the reception decor.
The options are:
Terra Bella Cafe: an organic coffee shop and cafe. The food is lovely, they have beautiful art on display, they have two fireplaces, and it is a place we frequent as a couple. We would probably have to rent this palce out special, in the evening, which could be spendy, but it would also be very private. Here’s a photo of an event going on in there, so you can see kind of what it looks like.

Then there is the Corsair Restaurant:
Fine dining restaurant with a full (expensive) bar and delectable cuisine. When my fiance and I ate there before, it cost about 0 to feed both of us, including drinks for him, since I am still underage (won’t be for the wedding!)
Here’s their website: http://www.corsairrestaurant.com/
And Lastly, Little Italy:
This is where we had our first date (it was rather painful but kind of funny to look back on). It is an Italian restaurant that is better than Olive Garden but not exactly fine dining. The food is more reasonably priced, but it is much busier, and the intimacy may not be there like it would at the other places. Unfortunately I don’t have a link for this place.
What do you all think?

Hello everybody! I need help! I like all the new and funky ideas they are doing with weddings these days, and I guess I just need some help with it! Our wedding is next Spring, but I am trying to get as much done now as possible:) My main problem is decorating the inside of the reception site. We are having an outside/garden/country feel wedding, and I am needing some decorating ideas for the reception. Here is some pics of stuff that I like, but am unsure how to incorporate it all together. I wish I had a picture of a good centerpiece idea, that way I could just copy it! haha. Anyway, here goes…

I’ve had a biOrb aquarium for the last 2 years and as some of you may know there not the greatest when it comes to keeping fish. I’ve decided to get rid of the present fish, give them to a relative or back to the fish store. drain the tank and dump all the decor.
I’m planning to use it as an indoor garden(mini rainforest) plant mini palm trees and tropical plants that are suitable etc…
I’m also planning on making interesting by adding a staircase for an upstairs, a little pond (if possible), mini houses/people surrounded by exotic plants and rocks etc..
Any ideas on how I can start this off?
I’m planning on doing some research first so if there’s anything that’s vital to know before starting up I’d love to know.
Do I need under soil filter?
Does the soil need to be a certain pH?
What plants would be suitable?
How can I make or where can I buy mini houses/people/stairs. How can I make an upstairs, or platforms?
Thank You

My husband is an avid surfer and we live near the coast. Our backyard could best be described as tropical messy with old a few old surfboards that have been forgotten and tossed aside. I’m rolling up my sleeves and turning the backyard into an oasis and I’d love to re-purpose these relics as decor since he has about 10 newer ones he uses now. Any ideas?
