February 27, 2012: As part of the National Day of Action to Occupy Our Food Supply, Occupy Wall Street organized several actions including a Seed Exchange and a Seed Bombing of vacant lots, drawing attention to the threats posed by big agribusiness and celebrating the free exchange and planting of natural, unmodified crop seeds. Three days earlier, organic farmers seeking protection from GMO contamination of their crops lost a battle when Judge Naomi Buchwald of the Federal District Court in Manhattan dismissed the class-action suit Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) et al v. Monsanto. Representatives of Food Democracy Now came to the Seed Exchange and gave an emotionally charged account of the case, and their ongoing fight to safeguard the genetic purity of crops. In the afternoon, members of Time’s Up! and the New York Bicycling Coalition led a bike ride that toured community gardens of the Lower East Side and made a stab at beginning new ones by seed-bombing vacant lots.
