How do I prepare land for a vegetable garden?

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

There is a 12 by 6 lot on the side of my house that I want to turn into a vegetable garden. My parents have agreed to let me do it, but in the past, they’ve used tons of weed killers and its covered by rocks. I’ve read a tons of different stuff online, and I’m not sure which to believe. Any advice is appreciated.

My mom planted a vegetable garden over our recently buried dead cat. Is it gross to eat the vegatables?

    Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Our cat of twenty years died 7 months ago. We buried her approx 2 feet under ground in a cardboard shoe box. My mother planted a vegetable garden (squash, eggplant etc.) 14" away from the grave site. My mom has been serving my brother and I the vegetables every night. Is it gross or wrong to eat them?

I have a vegetable garden next to the property fence. The rain water from slightly higher neighbor’s property?

      Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I have a vegetable garden next to the property fence. The rain water from slightly higher neighbor’s property comes to my vegetable garden. This water is contaminated with stools and urine of cat and dog. What is the potential risk of any disease transmission from a disease carrying/infected cat/dog’ fecal matter or urine entering the soil and the roots of vegetable grown in such environment?

          Vegetable Garden?

          Saturday, May 28th, 2011

So my brown thumb and I are going for take 2 on growing our own vegetables.

I had a tiny bit of success last year and managed to grow some broccoli, a couple of zucchinis and 1 yellow squash.

          My issue is this:
If my broccoli (or tomato or pepper) row is successful, I now have… what, maybe 2 weeks to eat 9 or so heads of broccoli before it goes bad?

Is there anything I can do to enjoy the vegetables of my labor for longer? I could probably freeze broccoli, but I can’t freeze tomatoes.

I work so hard, and I want to be able to enjoy the things I grow.

P.S. I have asked this in the garden section also, but surely there are some green thumbs among the vegetarians.

          :)
Thanks for all the wonderful answers so far. Spaghetti sauce sounds wonderful. I must add that tomato is an example. Any more general thoughts on vegetables in general, and enjoying them for longer would be very helpful.

          :)
Oooh, you are so right. I should add that.
I live in the U.S. in Ohio. Weather can be very tricky here.
Sometimes we have enormous winters, sometimes very hot summers.

Any home made recipe to enrich the soil for vegetable garden?

                    Friday, May 20th, 2011

I mean without using poop, my husband buy chicken and cow manur every summer, and it stunked. He even used our son’s poop, dead gold fish with tail stuck out the soil, I don’t think I want to eat the vegetable he planted.
