How can I start a vegetable/ herb garden in spite of rabbits and mice?

      Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

We recently moved into our first home (lived in apartments before). I have always been sort of a frustrated gardener- I’ve had lots of container plants. Now that I have a HUGE yard, I want to start a vegetable and herb garden. The problem is, we have lots of rabbits that visit our yard every day, and there are mice in the field behind us (they come into our yard sometimes). I am an animal lover and do not want to poison, trap, or otherwise "get rid of" these animals, but I don’t want them to eat all my veggies (or make the mouse problem worse). Is there anything I can do to protect my garden or discourage these animals from coming in my yard (I have a dog and a cat, but they still come in).

Any serious ideas would be appreciated.

How to create large indoor herb garden understairs, no light but can install any kind of light or water outlet

        Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

There is essentially no direct light, mostly in shadows, but in this stage of construction I can wire for and use anything that would work. I think it would light up the dark area under the stairs and create a nice herb garden near the kitchen – but no idea about how to light this, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Can I save my indoor herb garden?

        Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

I have a small herb garden in a spare bathroom that I have placed a grow light in. Some plants are doing really well, while others aren’t. I cut back most of the herbs in the fall but some of them haven’t started growing new again. The bathroom stay cool but not too cold. We have a clothes dryer in there that we use but it doesn’t get too hot or humid. Thoughts?

        Here is what I have:

        Doing Well:
        Aloe x2
        Lovage
        Echinecea

        Hanging on for dear life:
        Patchouli
        Stevia

        Possibly dormant or dead?:
        Sage
        Mint – in own container

        Pretty sure these are gonners:
        Rosemary
        Sweet Marjoram
        Lemon Balm
        * these three were potted together. Perhaps that is why they all perished.

Can I grow an indoor herb garden that is not in a kitchen window?

        Sunday, September 5th, 2010

I live in an apartment on the 14th floor and don’t have a kitchen window or a yard to grow an herb garden. I do have a large sliding glass door to offer light. Is it possible to grow herbs from seed in my place? I do have a balcony, but Virginia gets too cold at times. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

What type of light bulb should I buy/use for my indoor garden?

        Friday, August 13th, 2010

I’m growing a little container herb garden in my bedroom, but it doesn’t get enough light during the day. I want to buy a light bulb or a really cheap lamp (as in under if possible) I can use instead of buying the really expensive ones I’ve seen on the internet. What type of light bulb should I buy? Where can I buy them? How much are they going to cost?
