What is the most cost-effective way to build/run an indoor greenhouse?

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

I live in a small apartment in San Francisco. There is one tiny East-facing window in my bedroom, and I can’t leave it open during the day because I live in the ghetto. All the other residents in the building are old, and like it warm and dry, so that’s what the room is like 24/7. But I’m used to having lots of nice green plants around, so I want to build an indoor greenhouse to grow plants. Note: I don’t want to grow pot, just interesting, colorful tropical plants, so suggestions for the bomb-ass high-yield hydroponic equipment doesn’t help me. What is the most cost-effective way to do this? I need to build a set-up in which I can maintain high humidity, good ventilation, and lights, without trashing the environment or my wallet (I’m willing to invest some money and a lot of time 🙂 I’d also like to have a separate section for cacti. What can I say, I grew up with a big garden in San Diego in which you could grow anything, so I’m spoiled.

What kind of gardening book should I get her?

    Saturday, June 25th, 2011

My mom hasn’t really ever gardened before. Last year she tried, but didn’t get into it much. We are into the whole organic foods thing so I thought we should garden to save some money on all the produce we buy. Do you know of any good gardening books for beginners like my mom?

      My first vegetable Garden?? Advice?

      Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

I live in an area where it rains from September to April nearly every year, and then the temperatures rise and it is relatively dry from May to August. I know next to nothing about gardening, but would like to give it a try to save myself some money on groceries since I just bought my own house.

I want to start a smaller sized garden that is easy to maintain, but that I can grow my favorite vegetables. I would like to grow squash, cucumbers, carrots, leaf lettuce, sweet bell peppers and radishes.

      So my questions are:
      1) How large should I make the garden?
      2) What are the best vegetables to plant with the weather conditions that I generally have?
      3) What are the easiest "beginner" vegetables?
      4) How much space should I be allowing for each different plant?

        Cake/Cupcake decorating kit?

        Monday, March 14th, 2011

I am looking for a birthday gift for my girlfriend. She’ll be turning 22 later this month and she had a little machine that makes mini cupcakes as well as a set of mini cake pans. She likes to decorate them, but she doesn’t think they turn out well using a knife and the decorator it came with (this is the cake one I believe http://www.amazon.com/MINI-TIERED-DECORATING-ACCESSORIES-TOTAL-14PC/dp/B0031QF3WU/ref=sr_1_53?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1299448951&sr=1-53). So I was thinking for her birthday I could get her a turning decorating table and maybe something to decorate the cakes and cupcakes with, but I have no idea what I’m looking at or what to buy. We’re both still in college, so money is a bit tight, so that factors in too.

A turntable I found is here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00138Y964/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER) and has some fairly good reviews. I think it would work.

When looking for decorating supplies, I really got lost. There are so many on amazon. Here are some of the ones I found:

        Ateco set: http://www.amazon.com/Ateco-Piece-Cake-Decorating-Set/dp/B001B2QXJS/ref=sr_1_55?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1299448951&sr=1-55

        Wilton set: http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Decorating-Basics-Student-Kit/dp/B003LMY6JA/ref=sr_1_32?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1299449179&sr=1-32

        Progressive set: http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-International-Bakers-Decorating-Set/dp/B000S0YNUU/ref=sr_1_47?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1299448567&sr=1-47

I honestly don’t know much about them or what would be good for her. She just enjoys to decorate them and have fun. I think they are perfect the way they are, because they all taste the same going down, but she wants make them look better. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

What paint should I use to create my masterpiece?

              Monday, January 31st, 2011

I would like to get into painting canvases. Not for money but more or less to hang in my house (to match specific decor). However, I know very little about painting and have no idea what type of materials are used by semi/professionals. I definitely don’t want to use water color but am not sure if I need to use oil paints. There is specific paint for stencilling also, with the very stiff brushes, that I have used before with success for a border, but I don’t know if that would look ridiculous on canvas. If it matters, I wouldn’t be painting a house or a garden, it would be an abstract mess of colors and shapes. Any help?

The property appraiser is coming! What can I do?

                Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

No need to answer after 02/20/2010.

I know about the neighborhood analysis and all that. I need to know which things that are WITHIN my control that I should focus on the most. If the house doesn’t appraise as it did when we bought it a couple of years ago, the re-fi will fall through and that would be REALLY bad. Everything is in relatively the same shape as when we bought it (not considering decor), so I’m not severely worried (except for the market conditions), but still trying to get my house clean and up to par. So far I’ve deep-cleaned the carpet and floors. What else? The cobwebs that are impossibly high at the top of the stairwell? The firewood under the porch against the house? What about the basement? What REALLY matters? In your answer, please be sure to prioritize. I’m very short on time and energy, so I need to focus on the major stuff first.

Also, do you know if the new "whole house" water filtration/softener system we put in will affect the value? What about the new rock garden out front?

                THANK YOU!
                It is FHA.

Houses in the neighborhood aren’t selling at all, so there really isn’t anything to compare to.
I guess I should have mentioned that I’m also short on money … as well as energy and time.

Are you fed up with how quickly decoating fads come and go?

                  Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Years ago there were no home and garden shows to spark our interest to keep on top of the latest decor trends. This and manufactures/retailers that want us to keep buying must be creating the decor buying frenzy to always be IN STYLE. Now it seems the styles and trends change every year. One year wallpaper is out, the next it’s back in but now in big bold patterns and colours. One year very neutral and beige is in, the next year beige and neutral is passe. Now everything has to be GRAY!!! IN Ceramic tiles are now 12" X 36" or 48". So now my tiles are old fashioned. I’m fed up and wonder if I’m the only one? Please tell me your views.

I’m tired of painting rooms frequently to be IN…..and now you have to paint or paper a feature wall to be IN. I’d rather save my money for retirement instead of becoming DECOR Poor. And all the stuff that used to be in style goes out the door to Salvation Army, Goodwill or it’s scooped up for free on Craiglist.
Years ago people didn’t change their funiture until is was worn out and then many just reupholstered what they had. Rooms were only repainted when they needed to be. And no body judged us as being out of style. Manufacturers and Retailers are forcing us to buy, buy, buy, are there others out there who would rather save, save, save? Should we say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH to retailers and boycott buying the current trends?

pagans…. if you could would you…?

                  Thursday, January 6th, 2011

if you could have any amount of land/gardens that you desired and there was no limit on the money you could spend would you:

have a garden and how many? also would you have a garden/areas in the garden for each element (fire, water, wind, earth)?

would you have an alter in your garden?

how big would your perfect space (garden/outdoor space) be and what would you do with the space? (garden:what type and what type of plants, space: decor/hardscape, other:whatever else you would do).

how much time would you spend in your outdoor space/garden?

                  thanks!
