Where to find mini-tools for gardening indoors in pots?

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Hi
I had a little set when I was younger. It had a little rake about 1 1/2" wide, plus one wide and one skinny trowel. It was just perfect for gardening in the house, for herb pots and the like. I would like another one, if possible with more things.

Thank you in advance
x

Easy way to get soil ready for a vegetable garden?

      Sunday, September 4th, 2011

I’ll have a 12′ x 4.5′ garden and need to get the soil ready. Our soil is largely clay. I’ve got compost, sand. mulch, and can get manure (though I think the compost is sufficient). I’ve got a good shovel and a Garden Claw and metal rake and other tools.

Now I need suggestions on how to get the soil ready for the seeds I plan to plant in the next few days. Any procedures or links to easier ways to get the soil ready would be appreciated.

      Thanks.

How to build a Garden Tool Storage Bin for under $20 Holds 18 tools! Save Money and Room!

        Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Dad came up with a pretty good idea for storing all the garden tools he had floating around in his garage. First he purchased a used (empty) 50 gallon barrel from a local food processor for around . the barrel’s top is permanently sealed, but it has two large threaded holes in it. He cleaned out the residue from the original contents (molassas) using hot water and some dish soap. Using a 2 1/8″ hole saw, he drilled 14 more holes into the top (in addition to the two holes already in it) giving the top of the barrel a total of 16 useable holes. By pouring four gallons of 1.5″- round river rock through the 18 holes he gives the barrel enough weight and stability so that it won’t tip over with the tools in it, but still be easy to move around the garage. The only thing I didn’t show in the video was that I would drill some small drainage holes in the bottom of the barrel if I was going to store it outside. (This is why you want to use round river rock as it will not compact (like crushed rock) and will allow water drainage through the rock.) As long as the holes in the bottom of the barrel are smaller than the round rock it would allow water to drain, but not let the rocks fall out the bottom. Dad’s storing his tools inside so no need to drill drainage holes.

Will rusty tools used on my veggie garden give my customers tetanus?

            Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

I had a small veggie garden last year, so this wasn’t a problem as I used some small tools I purchased myself. This year, I plan to go pro, and came upon some old tools (spade, pitchfork, rake, etc) that were here from the previous owner of my house. Problem is, they’re rusty. Can I use them safely, or should I scrap them and buy all new stuff?
PS: I will be composting, too.
